Techniques

Swedish (Relaxation) Massage

A deeply relaxing technique that utilizes long gliding strokes, kneading, friction, rocking, and (sometimes) tapping to ease muscle tension and induce a relaxation response. This technique is great for general muscle soreness and preventative care.

Deep Tissue (Trigger Point) Massage

A muscle specific technique that works to release knots (trigger points) that might be causing pain, limited movement, and/or inflammation. This technique is slower than Swedish massage and pressure is applied by the therapist with their fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, or forearms. It is important that we use honest communication with this technique because even though the pressure is deeper, your pain level should never be above a 7 on a scale from 1-10 (10 being very painful). This technique is great for addressing chronically tense areas such as the lower back, shoulders, and neck.

Hot Stone Massage

A deeply relaxing massage that combines the penetrating effect of hot stones with soothing manual massage. Basaltic river rocks are heated to between 125 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit and then both used as massage tools and strategically placed on the client. The therapy can relax deep muscular tissue and soothe aching joints while feeling gentle and relaxing. In cases of injury, cocooning an area with cold stones can help decrease inflamation. In addition, contrast therapy, which uses cold stones in combination with hot stones, can increase circulation to a specific area. This is the massage for those that are looking for serious relaxation!

Sports Massage

A technique specific to the needs of an athlete. Sports massage is broken down into four types:

  • pre-event = a short, stimulating massage
  • post-event = promotes rest and recovery by increasing blood flow and flushing out toxins
  • restorative = emphasis on prevention by addressing common tension areas
  • rehabilitation = enhances recovery by increasing circulation and relieving tension (This technique is not only for athletes but for anyone with chronic pain, injury, or range of motion issues.)
